Since its opening in 1997, Aoibnheas has provided help and support to
more than 4000 women and children escaping Violence in the Home.
The refuge has 10 self-contained family units, each with sleeping quarters,
dining and kitchen areas, own shower and toilet. It also has a childrens'
playroom, a communal kitchen and dining area, a large comfortable living
room, and a cosy counselling room. Upon arrival, each resident is assigned
a key-worker who will help with advice and practical information on legal,
financial, and other matters. In addition, qualified and accredited
counsellors are available to help residents come to terms with their situation
and find their own solutions. Childcare staff work with the children to ensure that
they receive the best support available in the time available. The residents can
also attend courses offered in the refuge on topics such as parenting, personal
development, legal matters etc.

There is also a key worker who deals with second-stage housing
and follow-on work with women and children once they have moved on from the
refuge. In addition, we offer a 24 hour Help-line to women and men who are
experiencing Violence in the Home but unwilling or unable to come to the refuge.
